PharmaTech Outlook named Nest.Bio Resident, Altrix Bio, a top 10 biotech startup for 2021. Altrix Bio was founded in 2019 to further develop their idea of a “Surgery in a Pill" platform that delivers drugs to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract to help treat diabetes type 2. Studies have shown that around 30 percent of overweight people develop diabetes and 85 percent of diabetics are overweight. Gastric Bypass surgery has been proven effective at reversing the effects of diabetes and obesity but it comes with a cost. LuCI mimics the effects of surgery but with less risk. It's a small pill that sticks to the lining of the upper gastrointestinal tract and creates a coating that helps control glucose levels. Altrix is developing other ways to use LuCI for diseases that may require a pill as a delivery vessel to the gastrointestinal system.
